Tuesday 31st July
Quite a sad day as we said goodbye to the in-foal Gaelic Roulette who is off to be a broodmare. She on a total of 5 races while with us and was the perfect dual purpose mare with wins over hurdles on the flat (turf and awt) and ground conditions as varied as soft to good to firm. She has such a strong personality and we all will miss her but she will be more than well looked after at home by her owners Graham and Lynn Knight.
At home in Newmarket most of the horses had 2 canters on Warren Hill. Pictured below are Arthurian and Carlton Scroop on Long Hill. Both horses are coming on well and should be on the racetrack by the end of August.
Friday 27th July
Most of the yard did two canters on Warren Hill in preparation for working tomorrow (pictured below is Maximus Aurelius).
Tavares performed better than I had hoped for at Sandown yesterday, finishing in mid division and showing that he has the ability to win a race or two. He behaved perfectly the whole day and won the Best Turned Out award (Congratulations to Linda who led him up).
Tomorrow we take The Bonus King down to Lingfield for a 10f handicap. This will be the longest trip on the flat we have tried with the horse but he gives every indication at home that it should not pose a problem.
Thursday 26th July
With the arrival of the yearling sales catalogues at this time of year, trainers thoughts turn to their next batch of recruits . I was lucky enough to be able to see one of the yearlings coming to us at Grove Farm Stud. She is a bay filly by Night Shift (pictured below). She is so far unnamed and will join the yard in late October for breaking-in.
Another new recruit, Tavares, has his first run for us today at Sandown. He is a lovely looking colt and although a 4 year old this will only be his third racecourse appearance. He has run very green in his first two starts and will improve as he gains racing experience.
Wednesday 25th July
Many thanks to all those who have asked after Gihan after his fall at Yarmouth. He is now back on his feet and has been into the yard to see us. We expect he will be riding again in 6 weeks but we will not rush him.
You may have noticed that Orchard House now runs under the name of the Japan Racing Club. This club has been set up for Japanese ex-pats living and working in the UK and is proving to be very successful. We were delighted that Shuji Kashiwada (club member and General Manager of the Japanese Racing Association's London Office) could join us recently at Windsor racecourse and meet jockey Jamie Spencer wearing the club's distinctive colours.
Monday 18th June
A busy time for us on the gallops as we prepare for our next batch of runners. Gaelic Roulette revisits Kempton Park on Wednesday evening looking for her third win on the trot. The Bonus King runs at Ayr on Friday and Orchard House is at Redcar on Saturday.
Pictured below are The Bonus King (nearside) and Maximus Aurelius cantering on Long Hill.
Monday 11th June
Orchard House has come out of his race last week very well and should be out again soon. His win makes it 9 so far for 2007 for us and we have a strike rate of 29%. I did not run Gaelic Roulette yesterday at Bath due to the firm ground.
Pictured below is Tidal Fury leading Esthlos and Alhambra Banks.
