Wednesday 21st June 2006

Today was one of those days that we had something exciting happening every lot. Pictured below is The Bonus King schooling with Spike riding. The same lot saw us dash across to the Cambridge Road polytrack to see Shardia, Gaelic Roulette and Bill Bennett work over 8f. The babies (Eastern Playboy, Ronannis and Henrietta Mews) worked over 5f on the Al Bahathri gallop. Orchard House did a solo piece on Warren Hill.
The first of many skips arrived at Exeter House this morning. The floors above the stables are being ripped out and replaced. It is remarkable how much has been done in such a short period of time. The storage space this will create will allow us to keep the yard clear of bales of bedding etc.

Thursday 20th June 2006

Our 2-year olds are progressing very well. We are hoping that the first of them will run in about 2 weeks. Today they (Eastern Playboy, Ronannis and the Compton Place filly) did 2 canters up Warren Hill in preparation for a strong piece of work tomorrow. They were led up the hill both times by Orchard House (pictured), an unraced 3-year old colt who is progressing very well. He suffered a suspensory problem last year but shows no sign of this now and is about 4-6 weeks away from racing.

Monday 19th June 2006

Tidal Fury arrived home safely from France yesterday noon. Most of the yard had a single easy canter on Warren Hill. Esthlos (Tommy) managed to throw his rider and had a hack across Long Hill with the rest of the yard chasing him on foot (shades of a Benny Hill closing sequence at times).ElliLewtia is pictured below following the rest of 3rd lot back to Warren Place. So Elegant had a gentle canter around Bury Hills and looked to have recovered from being slightly jarred up racing at Bath last week. She will have a week of gentle canters and will probably race again in about 3 weeks time. its a shame she became jarred but we now know she does not like firm ground (she has won on good to firm) and that she does not stay 2 miles+ (she had won over 1m 5f). We have a system of collective responsibility in the yard which means that we can try different options with the horses without having to cover our backs. As ever with training racehorses there are those not doing the job who are blessed with 20-20 hindsight. Why they don't start training themselves is a mystery to me.

Friday 16th June 2006

Arrived home in Newmarket at 3am from Longchamp. Tidal Fury left at 6am for Auteuil where he will compete in the Grade 1 Prix Alain du Breil tomorrow. Darth Vader and Esthlos are progressing very well (both had fractures and both gelded a couple of weeks ago) and are able to canter again slowly around Bury Hills.
Mike and Hazel White visited Ring of Destiny who has been turned out at a local stud farm while he recovers from his tendons (see below).

Wednesday 7th June 2006

Our two new arrivals have settled into the routine of the yard very well. Lady Nimue (pictured below) will start to be broken in over the next few days. THe Desert Sun colt has been bought by the Playboy Racing Club and has been renamed Eastern Playboy. We hope to have him racing in the next 3-4 weeks. Tidal Fury schooled very well today in preparation for his Group 1 race at Auteuil on 17th June.

Friday 2nd june 2006

Melancholy Dane arrived safely from Ireland and is settling in well to life at Exeter House. He will stay here for a couple of weeks before joining the other 2-year-olds at Warren Place. Bill Bennett just trotted this morning and although he has recovered from his slight stiffness (off-side-rear) he will now have to miss his planned race at Chantilly on 11th.

Entries for next week include:
Tuesday - Lingfield: The Bonus King
Wednesday - Lingfield: Shardia
Wednesday - Kempton: Cortina
Thursday - Huntingdon: Gaelic Roulette

The new voice answering the phone in the office is Tricia who is our new Racing Secretary. For any questions you would have normally asked me and received a blank look in response please give her a call on (01638) 664446. She works 6.30am to noon and 4pm to 6pm.
