Tuesday 4th April 2006
One of the enjoyable surprises I have found since gaining my training license are the owners who turn up to support any of the yard's runners whenever they can. Bill Bennett is one of our owners' favourites (and also one of mine as he has won 5 times). His unofficial supporters club were out in force at a sunny but cold Warwick today as four groups of owners turned up to cheer him on. Bill's record at Warwick going into the race was perfect - 100%, two wins from two runs. Unfortunately a strong drying wind changed the going from his "wetter than heavy" preference and he finished mid-division, doing his best work at the end.
Bill's mum is an ex-Sir Mark Prescott trained broodmare by Polar Falcon called Concert. She boards at the Haras du Logis stud farm, which is located about 40 miles south of Deauville. We will be taking delivery of her 2 year old grey filly (named Lady Nimue) in the next month. She has also produced a Limnos colt yearling and has a month old Zieten filly foal, both of whom we look forward to in the future.
This year the main yearling sale at Deauville will run from August 18th to 21st. I will be in attendance throughout the sale. Any owners wishing to purchase at the auction will find the sales company's website full of information (www.deauville-sales.com). I am hoping to be able to organise a visit to the Haras du Logis during the sale so please let me know if you plan to visit. In addition to Bill Bennett's ever increasing family, stallions boarding at the stud include Diktat, Country Reel, Slickly, Sagamix, and Zieten.

Middleham Park Racing have 10% shares available in our Compton Place 2 year old chestnut filly (Racing name: Henrietta Mews). A super filly with scope and pedigree. She cost 13,500gns at Tattersalls Part Two 2005. She was selected by bloodstock agent Andrew Mead of MeadGoodbody who was instructed to find a quality bargain filly “with pedigree.” This she has in abundance being half sister to listed winner and Group placed JALOUSIE (rated 104) and Group placed The Deep (rated 113). The second dam’s black type fills the page with 6 Group performers under her including Hungerford Stakes winner BIN ROSIE. She will have paddock value once her racing days are over and the family remains progressive. Jalousie has now retired to the paddocks and her first yearling by Fantastic Light sold for 85,000gns, also at Tattersalls 2005.
The dam Duende was a 2yo winner, as of course was COMPTON PLACE who went on to become joint top rated 3yo sprinter in Europe in 1997 winning the Group One July Cup. Compton Place has quickly established himself at stud siring the winners of 217 races to date including PLEASURE PALACE, SHIFTING PLACE and BOOGIE STREET. He is in great demand with breeders and even at an increased stud fee of £7,000 he is already fully booked for 2006. That makes the 13,500gns we paid for our filly look like a bargain and indeed she was. A late April foal she will need a little time but the dam has already produced 5 2yo winners (out of 6 in all) and Compton Place is the sharpest stallion she has been to. At this stage you would hope she would be running mid summer.
The shares cost £1,950 then £175 per month. Tim Palin runs the syndicate and he can be contacted on (01652) 660347 or on his mobile 07785 745292.
Saturday 1st April
Quite a busy day with most horses doing their quickest work of the week. Jockey Shane Kelly came in to ride work on Gaelic Roulette (pictured below) and Carlton Scroop. Chris King and David Clark from "The Prospectors" syndicate came to watch So Elegant have a light canter on Bury Hill and saw that she retains all her enthusiasm and spirit for racing. She had a busy time last year, winning 4 times, and looks a picture for having had a short break. She is being readied for the forthcoming campaign and should be winning again soon.
There is much argument in the industry at the moment regarding 48 hour declarations. Each winter we cope this time frame and I do not find it a problem. I know this is not a popular view in the training community but my experience in France was based around 48 hours system. Having tomorrow's racecards being printed in today's Paris-Turf seemed logical as it gave punters more of an opportunity to study form (many an evening spent in fruitless search of a winner!). Despite the PR spin, it is not only the betting industry that will benefit from 48 hour decs as interests as varied as the racehorse transport companies to the lads going racing would appreciate knowing as early as possible where they are going. We have quite a few runners that travel the day before the race (any runner at a course further north than Catterick/Redcar stays overnight). These horses will often leave the yard before the final declarations are even known under the current 24 hour system.
Friday 31st March 2006
Spring is here at last and we have had another warm day that will benefit our fillies who have not enjoyed the cold spell.
John Dixon, who is part of the Twelfth Night syndicate, spent the morning with us to watch the preparations for Tidal Fury's next adventure in France, a Gr.3 race at Auteuil on 16th April. The horse is progressing very well and we are hoping for a big run from him. Today he powered up Warren Hill twice (pictured below).
Bill Bennett and Skye Boat Song both had an easy day after working yesterday while the rest of the team cantered. The Bonus King lost out on a run at Kempton Park on Sunday, missing the cut by one. His next target will be at Wolverhampton (Monday 10th). Entries went in today for Kempton (Wednesday 5th) for both Gaelic Roulette and Carlton Scroop.
Thursday 30th March
A warm but windy morning. It had rained overnight but not enough so we could use the grass gallops. Skye Boat Song and Bill Bennett worked over 8f (Cambridge Road polytrack). Both horses are due to run early next week (Skye Boat Song on Monday at Lingfield - Bill at Warwick on Tuesday). The other horses had a single normal canter except the two year olds who had two easy 3f canters (Side Hill woodchip).
Wednesday 29th March
Today we took Charlie (Carlton Scroop) to Great Yarmouth for a successful stalls test before racing started. The stalls handlers were aided by Steve Dibble (known to all as "Yarmy") who has done a lot of work with the horse at home.
