Saturday 7th October

Lowestoft Playboy is back with us having had the summer off and will be campaigned on the all-weather.  Talking of playboys...Spike has returned for a few weeks before flying out to work in Dubai.  He will be taking Carlton Scroop to Ireland next week for a race at Tramore on Thursday 12th. So Elegant goes to the sales on 23rd October.

We are in the middle of sales time here in Newmarket so expect details of new horses in the coming weeks.  We are overflowing at the yard as it is and I need to find more boxes quite quickly.

Friday 6th October

Shardia ran an encouraging race at Nottingham on Tuesday and has come out of the race very well. She enjoyed the soft ground and is in very good form.

The weekend looks very busy with runners - Saturday sees Bill Bennett at York and The Bonus King at Bangor. Orchard House travels to Bath on Sunday and we hope he puts his last disappointing run behind him.  I will be declaring Esthlos for Monday at Wolves if he canters well tomorrow (he is the horse with the white face below).

Friday 29th September

Paul Stanley visited to see Ring of Destiny.  As you can see from the photograph below the horse looks a picture.  His tendons are coping very well and have not given us any problems since his return.  I plan to keep him walking and trotting until the end of October when we will have his tendons scanned again.  If all he is still all OK then we will start cantering him.

I have decided that So Elegant should be retired.  She has won 4 races and has served her owners, "The Prospectors" syndicate, proud.  She has had numerous problems and we have found it impossible to keep her sound enough to train.  The paddocks await and she will make a fine broodmare.  She goes to Tattersalls Sales at the end of October.

Carlton Scroop runs tomorrow at Fontwell (Richard Johnson rides) and should go close.  His next planned race is in Ireland on 12th October at Tramore.  This is a flat race (flag-start!!!) over 1m4f.

The ENTRIES page has been updated with our planned runners for next week.

Wednesday 27th September

Spent the whole day as a guest of the Northern Racing College near Doncaster.  All stable staff under 19 years old have to go to one of the racing colleges before joining a yard and I think it is vital that trainers have an input at this formative stage in the lads' careers.  I saw two groups of students, the first 7 weeks into their 12 week course.  Most had good riding skills and are supported by an excellent team of instructors that have pride in their previous students achievements (including jockeys from Hayley Turner to our own Derrick McGaffin).
The progress made by the students at the college was more obvious after meeting the second group who are only 3 days into the course.  They are full of wide-eyed enthusiasm but many have not ridden a horse before and are away from home for the first time.
Anybody looking a racing as a career can visit the racing schools for a taster day.  Have a look at www.northernracingcollege.co.uk

Tuesday 26th September

While our Josr Algarhoud yearling colt enjoys himself turned out at stud his relatives are running well.  His dam's half sister Wagtail (trained by Ed Dunlop for Hesmond Stud) was a Listed winner at Ascot at the weekend.  Featherlight, his half sister by Fantastic Light ran an encouraging 4th at Pontefract and shaped as if she will improve with a longer trip.
