Thursday 15th February
A very busy day on the heath. Bill Bennett and Esthlos (pictured below) travelled over to the racecourse with Carlton Scroop so he could try another set of starting stalls he is not used to. Scott has settled into the routine very well and has had some light canters.
Doncater Bloodstock Sales have published their breeze-up sale catalogue. The sale takes place between 3rd and 5th of April and consists of 2-year olds who can be seen working prior to the sale. I will be attending the sale so if you are interested in purchasing a racehorse that is almost ready to race please get in contact.
Wednesday 14th February
We are gradually boring Carlton Scroop (pictured below) into submission with the starting stalls after two weeks of visiting them daily. He will have a stalls test at the end of the month which, knowing him, will not be a formality.
The older horses have started faster work as we prepare for the start of the turf season. Both Featherlight and Esthlos will have runs on the all-weather in the next couple of weeks and Tidal Fury's preparations for the Arkle Trophy are going to plan.
Tuesday 13th February
The cold weather has passed and today was quite warm. Featherlight, Carlton Scroop, Bill Bennett and Esthlos all had a spin up Long Hill. Maximus Aurelius (leading the string below) improves the quicker we go with him and looks a very exciting prospect for the forthcoming season.
Henrietta Mews, Alhambra Banks, Eastern Playboy and Elli Lewtia have all had their workload increased this week and are so far coping well.
Monday 12th February
Carlton Scroop is visiting the practice starting stalls every day and is making very good progress. His stalls ban ends on Friday and we hope to be able to have him tested soon after. Featherlight was ridden today by Mike Mason, Director of the Northern Racing College, who was visiting Newmarket for the day (pictured below). She is due to run next on 27th February at Lingfield.
Friday 9th February
Still some snow on the ground and a slightly colder day than yesterday. The horses all get out (Crimson Mitre leading Arthurian up Warren Hill pictured below).
The horses seem in fine form at present, the 2-year olds especially are progressing each week and are probably the most forward bunch we have had.
Featherlight and Gaelic Roulette are due to be covered this year and are under lights until 10pm each night to help stimulate them to come into season. Once in foal we are allowed to run them for 120 days. Many mares in foal show an improved performance on the racetrack so it will be interesting to how they perform.
Thursday 8th February
Not a flake of snow while feeding the horses at 5.30am but by the end of first lot Newmarket was covered. The all-weather gallops and walking grounds were safe to use and all our horses managed to get out for exercise.
Pictured below is Arkle hopeful Tidal Fury braving the elements. He has come out of his last race at Southwell very well and is enjoying his work. We say goodbye to Elli Lewtia today as she goes to the sales.
