Newmarket - the best training centre in the world

The town was founded in 1220 and is set between two extensive areas of open heathland: Newmarket Heath to the southwest and Warren Hill to the northeast. For centuries these chalk-based heaths have provided the well drained and turfed open grounds essential for the training of racehorses.

Royal patronage of the town started with James I in 1605 and the role of the town as the home of racing soon developed. Today the training centre covers 2800 acres of fully maintained grounds, with 50 miles of turf gallops and 17 miles of artificial gallops. There are different gallops to suit every horse at each stage of its career. It offers the best turf gallops in the world and we are able to use fresh ground every day, a unique feature to Newmarket.

Distinctively Newmarket has two racecourses, The Rowley Mile and the July Racecourse and hosts numerous top race meetings such as the Craven, the Guineas, the Cambridgeshire and Champions Day. Newmarket is also home to: The National Horseracing Museum, The National Stud, The British Racing School, Tattersalls Bloodstock Sales and the Animal Health Trust.
